For generations, Waterfront has been part of San Diego's story. From local media coverage and community events to major holiday celebrations, here's where Waterfront has been recognized throughout the years.

Since 1933

Why San Diego keeps writing about the Waterfront

Waterfront Bar & Grill has been open on the corner of Kettner Boulevard and Grape Street since 1933 — the year Prohibition ended and the year San Diego's very first post-Prohibition liquor license was signed. Nearly a century later, we're still standing in the same tiny building, still pouring, and still the oldest tavern in the city. That's why so many local outlets keep coming back to write about us.

When Waterfront first opened, Kettner was a working waterfront full of tuna fishermen, shipbuilders, and Navy sailors. Little Italy grew up around us — the churches, the family restaurants, the produce markets, the mercato that fills Date Street every Saturday. As the neighborhood modernized, we stayed exactly what we always were: a corner bar with a full kitchen, honest prices, and a door that never really closes. Guests who grew up here bring their kids in for burgers now. Bartenders introduce grandchildren to the same regulars their grandparents used to drink with. That kind of continuity is rare in any city, and it's the through-line every San Diego publication ends up writing about.

The community role matters as much as the history. Waterfront hosts fundraisers for neighborhood causes, private wakes for families who don't have anywhere else that feels right, wedding after-parties for couples who had their first date at the bar, and the kind of weeknight regular crowd that makes Little Italy feel like a village instead of a downtown zip code. When something is happening in the neighborhood, it usually ends here. When someone in the neighborhood is being celebrated, they usually get toasted here.

We're also known for the events themselves. The Chad & Brad Summer Kickoff, the Sunday Service afternoon party, the Hangover Brunch Party, Padres watch parties, the World Cup takeover, the Halloween costume party that spills out onto Kettner, the Christmas Eve open-door tradition — each one has been covered, listed, and previewed by local press because each one draws a real crowd from across the city. Publications like KPBS, San Diego Magazine, the San Diego Reader, the Union-Tribune, and Times of San Diego feature Waterfront events because their readers actually go to them.

This page is the archive. Every article, event listing, interview, award, and community feature we're aware of will live here — grouped by event so it's easy to see how each night grew, and easy to trust the reputation the coverage adds up to. If you're a writer, editor, or producer working on a Little Italy story, this is also the fastest way to see what has already been said, and to get in touch about what's happening next.
